for him, its how to get the image into the film, rather than the other way around. most narrative film-makers begin with the story and then illustrate it. i think he begins with an image. the story is secondary, its not primary. if you are asking the narrative question with david lynch or, what does this mean? i say, maybe that we are wrong question; maybe you should go back to the dadaist appreciation of the image as image and ask those questions first.
